What is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is designed to address the muscle groups that are most stressed during exercise and physical activity. Using a combination of techniques such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and stretching, targeting tight areas, it promotes circulation, and releases muscle tension. These techniques are intended to help your muscles recover more quickly and function more effectively.
What are the benefits?
Sports massage offers a wide range of benefits that can help you feel better and perform at your best, including:
-
Improved Flexibility: By targeting specific muscle groups, sports massage helps improve your range of motion and flexibility, reducing the risk of injury.
-
Reduced Muscle Tension: It can relieve tightness and knots in the muscles, promoting relaxation and better movement.
-
Increased Circulation: Enhanced blood flow helps deliver nutrients to the muscles, speeding up recovery and reducing inflammation.
-
Enhanced Performance: Regular sports massage helps keep muscles in peak condition, leading to better performance during training or competition.
-
Injury Prevention: By identifying potential areas of strain and tension, sports massage can help prevent injuries before they occur.
-
Faster Recovery: Post-exercise massage promotes the removal of metabolic waste products like lactic acid, helping muscles recover more quickly after intense physical activity.
How often should I book a session?
The frequency of sports massage largely depends on your level of physical activity and personal goals. Generally, athletes or highly active individuals benefit from sports massage once a week or bi-weekly. However, if you're preparing for a competition, training for an event, or dealing with a specific injury, you may benefit from more frequent sessions. For those who are less active, booking a sports massage every 2–4 weeks can still help maintain muscle health and prevent stiffness or discomfort.
What to expect during a session
When you book a session with me, I will first take the time to discuss your specific needs and any areas of tension or discomfort. Based on this conversation, I will tailor the session to target the muscles most in need of attention. You can expect a combination of techniques, such as deep pressure, stretching, and possibly the use of tools to release fascia and muscle knots.
During the session, communication is key! Feel free to let me know if the pressure feels too intense or if you'd like to focus more on a specific area. Sessions lasts 60, 90 or 120 minutes, depending on your needs: a 60 mins session will be focused on a few areas of the body whereas 90 or 120 mins session allow sufficient time for a fully body massage.
After the session, I may suggest specific stretches or hydration tips to aid in recovery. You may feel some mild soreness, but any discomfort should subside after a day or two. Regular sessions can help you maintain a healthy, injury-free body and improve your overall athletic performance.
